A Riverside Haven On The Algarve’s Edge

Dear Subscriber,
Imagine a town on the mouth of a wide, flowing river.
Now imagine that this same river is an international border, and on the far bank is another land with a different language and history.
This, in a nutshell, is the story of Vila Real de Santo António, the easternmost town on Portugal’s Algarve coast. Next door, on the other side of the Guadiana river, is Spain.
To get the feel of the town, stroll along the Avenida da República, the promenade that follows the river. A line of tall palm trees and a marina with pleasure boats create a distinct atmosphere of Old World seaside holiday.
The international flavor is strong. Spanish is often heard in the street, and ferries leave for the Spanish town of Ayamonte, a short ride upstream on the other side. Further upriver, but clearly visible from the town, an elegant modern road bridge links Portugal to its neighbor.
