Portuguese Carnival:
Bridging Modern And Traditional
Feb. 25, 2024
Dear Portugal Letter Subscriber,
There’s a saying in Portugal…
A vida são dois dias e o Carnaval são três. It
means “Life lasts two days and Carnival lasts three.”
It’s based on the idea that life is short and
opportunities for fun and indulgence must be enjoyed to the fullest.
Carnival embodies a spirit of unrestrained celebration,
including pranks that can sometimes go overboard. But pouting and frowning are
not likely to get you anywhere. No one gets offended at carnival (another local
saying).
The truth is, social and political satire and criticism
go hand in hand with practical jokes.
More than just criticizing, carnival implies that this
finger-pointing practice can be done lightly, freely, and with no consequences.
To truly grasp the essence of Portuguese
carnival traditions, it’s essential to delve into their rich history and
cultural significance.
Across Europe, carnival has many facets that come
straight from its origins: a series of ancient rituals and festivals that took
place on the border between winter and spring, honoring Earth’s cycles.
