Dear Reader,
At an ancient crossroads in the hills of the eastern Algarve, the town of São Brás de Alportel has a rare claim to fame in inland Portugal: its population is steadily growing.
In many parts of the world, this statistic might produce a weary “So what?” But in Portugal, it’s little short of extraordinary.
Away from the country’s coasts, the overwhelming trend in recent decades has been depopulation, with many villages dying or dead.
São Brás, an inland municipality of some 11,000 people, has bucked the trend. A palpable sense of community, astute political leadership, and some key practical considerations have set it on a winning path.
